My first rescue really rescued me.

Below you will find brief descriptions of our available labs and an overview of our adoption process.

Lu’s Labs recommends that you apply to adopt as soon as you are ready as our available dog roster is dynamic and the process may take time. Once your application is reviewed, an Adoption Coordinator will work with you to provide you more information about specific labs, and to help you find a good match for your family, home, and lifestyle.  Please note: Lu’s Labs charges a $25 non-refundable application fee to offset medical, transportation, and operational costs.

In order to help our first time adopters understand the time and effort needed to have a dog, we require all first time adopters (including those that grew up with dogs but have not had one since living on their own) to foster at least one dog in the age range and energy level requested prior to adopting a dog.

For inquries about your adoption applications, please email us at applications.luslabs@gmail.com

Available Labs

Please Note…

All of our available labs are recently rescued and are in the process of transitioning into a new foster home environment. Training, personality, and energy levels are continuously evolving as the dog acclimates. What you read below is only a snapshot of a complex animal undergoing significant change, written from the perspective of the lab’s intake foster family. Your lab will take weeks - or even months - to fully settle into his or her “true self” after becoming a part of your family.

Our labs often come to us with incomplete or no medical history. This means that ages listed may be an estimate provided by a shelter or a veterinarian, and may vary from assessment to assessment. Once in Lu’s Labs care, we provide needed vetting, neuter/spay surgery, heartworm testing/treatment, administration of preventative medications, and microchipping. All dogs are neutered/spayed prior to adoption if they are of minimum age (6mo Females, 9mo Males). Every dog adopted out after August 2020 is equipped with an AKC brand microchip with lifetime registration fees paid by the rescue. Weights listed are the dog’s weight upon intake and are updated if changes in +/- 10lbs occur. Dogs that are estimated to be overweight or underweight by +/- 10lbs are annotated.

**In order to help our first time adopters understand the time and effort needed to have a dog, we require all first time adopters (including those that grew up with dogs but have not had one since living on their own) to foster at least one dog in the age range and energy level requested prior to adopting a dog.

Black Jack

Male
1-2 years old
58 pounds

+ Black Jack's Biography

Meet Blackjack. If you are looking for a sure bet, an ace in the hole, and an overall big win in your life, then Blackjack is your guy! This shiny black and gorgeous 58-pound guy is so ready for his forever home! While he hit the jackpot when he ended up as a Lu’s lab, in his life up to now he has certainly not been dealt a fair hand. While we don’t know a lot about how this Louisiana sweetheart has spent his 1 year of life thus far, we can guess it hasn't been easy. He was found as a stray, underweight, and ended up in a high kill shelter. Luckily, our volunteers rescued him, and now he has a second chance to double down and get the life he deserves.

Blackjack is a friendly, outgoing, and fun young dog who is waiting for the right person to love and to help him learn what it means to be part of a family. Blackjack retains a lot of puppy behaviors so he will need training but he is a fast learner, food motivated, and wants to please! He is newly housetrained, knows sit, is learning to come when called, to not jump when excited and to walk nicely on a leash without pulling. Jack (as we call him) is still not convinced about the metal box and will bark in protest. Due to still needing work on the crate, he is not approved for an apartment or shared walls.

Jack is very sweet-natured, and he is friendly to everyone. Jack plays very well with other dogs and respects when they tell him they don't want to play. Blackjack has proven himself to be a good car passenger and loves swimming.

Jack is such a cuddly sweetheart but like any young dog he needs training, structure, and a family that will meet his activity needs. He loves everyone and is approved for kids... age of kids will be determined by how dog savvy the parents and children are! His foster mother says he loves attention from his people and soaks up mental and physical stimulation from them. Blackjack has so much potential, and he is finally in a place where the cards are going his way.

He is not approved for a home with cats since his exposure to them is unknown.

Won’t you take a chance on this sweet boy? If you do, and you play your cards right, it will be “winner, winner, chicken dinner” for everyone…and Blackjack really likes the “chicken dinner” part of that phrase! ❤️🐾🐾❤️

Please know this is a recently rescued dog that is still transitioning into a new home environment. Training, and even personality and energy levels are constantly evolving as the dog starts to feel better emotionally and physically. Your new dog will take days or even weeks to fully settle into his or her true self. What you read in this bio is a snapshot of this dog’s evolving personality. Additionally, the age listed is an estimate provided by the shelter and/or veterinarian. Different vets can provide different age estimates. So always consider the lab you are adopting to be within an age range of a couple of years of what is listed. Also remember, while we are a lab rescue, we do not have papers on these dogs, we cannot confirm any breed specific claims, and many of these dogs may be mixed with other breeds.❤️🐾🐾❤️

Dean

*On Medical Hold*

Male
2-3 years old
50 pounds

+ Dean's Biography

Roll out the red carpet for Dean! Delightful. Dazzling. Dynamic. Dean is all that and so much more! This stunning golden boy has star power and a playful bestie vibe. Dean is two to three years old and weighs about 50 pounds. All about his people and having fun, Dean’s positive energy will have you smitten as soon as you meet him!

Dean is a social boy and loves to meet anyone and everyone. I mean you can’t have too many friends. He’s outgoing and loves people and dogs. Dean has typical young lab energy and finds playing with other dogs is great fun. The dog park would be a dream — he can make new friends and run around. Dean also loves to play fetch and wrestle with dogs he is familiar with. With his social graces, he might enjoy doggie daycare too! Dean is also a velcro lab — he shadows his person everywhere they go and is interested in everything they do. He is also a champion cuddler who loves to snuggle and lounge with his person. He is not approved for kitties because he hasn’t met one yet. He sleeps in a crate, dog bed or even with his person. He really just loves being with his people.

We don’t know much about Dean’s background, but we do know that he’s a smart cookie! He is house trained and will ring a bell to go out. He is also crate trained. Plus he knows sit, down, up (to go upstairs), out (leave the room) and sometimes stay. He enjoys your attention and would benefit from a refresher on basic commands, as well as keeping four on the floor. Dean loves an adventure and going for walks but needs some work on his leash etiquette — he is just so excited to explore! With you as his guide, he’ll be an expert in no time.

Dean’s FM tells us that Dean is “the sweetest/most curious dog” she’s ever met. His athleticism makes her believe that Dean might be very successful at agility training, dock diving or high jump. She also says he has a unique bark that sounds almost like a duck quacking! Dean is a beautiful and sweet boy with loads of love to give. He would be a great doggie sibling to another active dog or as an “only” dog. Dean loves life and loves big. He would thrive with an active and fun family to take him on tons of adventures — maybe swimming, maybe hiking. This silly, playful boy wants to explore the world with his people. His infectious positive spirit will make every day brighter. Find out if golden Dean is the one to light up your life.

Coal is an absolutely awesome 1 year old black lab. I have been a volunteer with Lu's Labs for almost 5 years. When we were ready to add a new member to our family, where else would we go but Lu's Labs.

Coal is a typical active, fun loving boy who keeps us on our toes. He loves his big brother Cotton, a 10 year old White German Shepherd, and follows him everywhere. We are blessed to have him as a member of our family and can't imagine life without him!

Jack is my best friend, therapist, entertainer, and snuggliest bug! He was returned by 2 families before he found his way to me; the second time because he had developed some reactivity after breaking his leg and the family wasn’t able to handle it. Lu’s needed an emergency foster for him, and luckily my smart AC, Cassi, thought I might be able to help out. I lived in a busy apartment bldg with lots of dogs, so didn’t think I would be the right fit for him long term, but that incredible boy made his way into my heart immediately and we both knew he was home. We’ve had to work really hard to help him cope with the stressors that cause him to become reactive but that’s nothing compared to the joy that he brings into my life every day. He has the biggest heart in the world and just loves life so much. People are always commenting on how his tail never stops wagging and how he’s “really smiling”. All he needed was someone to understand him and be patient with him, and he has just blossomed into this beautiful perfect boy. Love my Jacky boy and love Lu’s Labs!

- Sarah M.

That incredible boy made his way into my heart immediately and we both knew he was home.

He’s delightfully uncoordinated, doesn’t fetch, and hogs the bed, but we love him anyways.

"We fostered for about 10 months before finally adopting Hunley. He was from a shelter in Louisiana and came to us after having pneumonia, plus being HW+ and having some complications from neutering. Watching him settle into his life in our home & his routine post-heartworm treatment has been the best part of adopting. After 7+ months with us he has finally relaxed into a lazy, silly Momma's boy who just wants snuggles and food. He loves his daily regiment of fruits & veggies, his long walks on the trail, dipping his paws in water (but not past his elbows), and belly rubs. He's delightfully uncoordinated, doesn't fetch, and hogs the bed, but we love him anyways."

Sasha

FKA Felicia
Adopted 4/3/16

Sasha is living the good life; she is massively spoiled. She loves snacks, sleeping, and visiting with her nana and pop pop. Sasha also LOVES water and dock diving! It's her favorite thing, and she is very good at it. She is so loved and we are so grateful for her.

Sasha was a part of the "F" Puppies litter. There were 5 of them, found in a box on the side of the road at four weeks old; no mom in sight. We couldn't have picked a better dog if we had had the choice. The "F" puppies were named after Forest, a dog that was rescued by Lu's but who passed away from heartworm disease.

I wasn't sure if Sasha liked water, she wasn't a huge fan of the bath or hose or puppy pool. When I took her to a lake I only had a 6 ft leash so she really wasn’t able to swim. So I went and got a 40 ft leash and tossed a toy in the water to see if she’d go get it. We did that a few times, and then we tried going off the dock and she ran off the dock back to the beach so she could walk into the water instead of jumping in…smarty pants. Then I saw dock diving on Dogs 101 and found a competition about 30 minutes from us. Her first competition jump was about 10’ 1” and her personal best is now 26'4"

We earned our invitations to worlds in February, 2019 for Big Air Master and Speed Retrieve Nitro. Sasha was competing in two disciplines. In Speed Retrieve, we had a new personal best of 5.937 seconds. We finished up our journey to worlds in 4th Place for Big Air Master, and in 5th for Place Speed Retrieve Nitro.

- Michelle & Paul K.

Sasha is #4 and #5 in her divisions, in the world.

Porter

Porter is the best thing to ever happen to us… we wonder daily how he possibly ended up in a shelter or how we got so lucky to adopt him. He's a quirky goof that loves snacks, sleeping, car rides, ducks and special walks/trips (he knows it's special because he wears his harness). His favorite place to go is Grandma's… she's heavy handed with the snacks. But he has enjoyed wineries, family get togethers, parks, pools, and our summer vacation in Maine. Porter is low energy but gets the wildest zooms at the most inconvenient times. At the dog park he just stands next to us and tilts his head asking when it's time to leave. Porter has gotten more snuggly over the years and has progressed to "nose boops" as his form of a kiss. Since we've had him he’s been a foster brother, tackled his fear of the stairs, met many neighborhood cats (through their windows), and mastered the art of selective hearing when it's time to get off the bed (there's just no room!). We love our Lu's Lab so much and thank everyone involved in saving his life!

Rufus aka Chase aka Rufuloof was a long time coming! After saying over and over to friends and family how much I wanted a pup and window shopping on Lu's Labs for years, I finally decided to apply. These past few months have been filled with the most love, puppy cuddles on the couch, and dog fur on everything! Even though he's a southern boy from Louisiana, Rufus has been loving his life in the big city of Washington DC with all the new friends and smells to keep him entertained all day long (he is extra loving that now mom is home all day!) Mom also thinks Rufus would make a great comfort dog one day; he has a talent for finding the people that need a little puppy love on our walks who tell us how much he makes their day when he says hi.

I can't imagine having adopted Rufus anywhere besides Lu's Lab's. The adoption coordinator and the foster mom's (both southern and northern) were such an integral part in helping make sure that Rufus and I would be a good match, and I feel so grateful every day that they saved him. Lu's was also amazing walking me through the Heartworm journey with Rufus. He was adopted Heartworm positive, and Lu's was constantly with me, talking me through every step, for which I am beyond thankful. There's no way we could have done it without them. Thank you Lu's Lab's for all that you do! Love, Elena & Rufus

Carson Running Trails!

...watching him grow over the past two years brought us inexplicable joy.

Carson

FKA Barney
Adopted 1/20/18
Origin State Louisiana
Lu’s Labs Team Cassi Sung (Adoption Coordinator), Tanya Michel (Foster), Kathy Campbell (Foster), Pam Ohle (Home Checker)

There are no words that can fully express how grateful and lucky we feel to have Carson (aka Mr. Carson aka Pupface aka The Chocolate Meester) in our family and watching him grow over the past two years brought us inexplicable joy. When we brought him home, he was full of puppy energy (vet estimates put his age at about 1 year) and just so, so much love. He is the smartest, goofiest, bounciest, must exuberant dog ever, and loves a great round of fetch, a long walk in the woods, or just a good sniff. At the sight of his hiking harness or the fetch ball, he starts running around our apartment and bouncing up and down in joy and excitement. When he's finally tired out, there's nothing that makes him happier than to snuggle you as close as he possibly can. He is gentle, loving, sensitive, and extraordinarily polite. We can count on one hand the number of times he has gotten into mischief, and it was minor mischief at that.

Although Carson has impressed us in countless ways, we are most amazed by his focus and drive as a trail dog. We are an active family and began training Carson to run behind us as we mountain bike on our local trails. We expected this training to take a while, but Carson figured it out in one afternoon, and now, no one bikes without Carson. It is without a doubt his absolute favorite activity, and he will run straight past people, other dogs, squirrels, deer, and birds when he is out on the trail.

We love Carson with every fiber of our beings and cannot thank the Lu's Labs team enough for bringing him into your lives. He is perfect for us in every way, and we are excited for all the adventures we have in store together!

Charlie (Alumni), Dudley (Alumni), and Cade (Honorary Alumni) Paucchi

They’re Feelin’ Lucky

The goal of this rigorous process is a happy dog, a happy family, and a lifetime of commitment.

Once your application is received, your application will be assigned to an Adoption Coordinator who will be with you throughout the approval and adoption process. Lu’s Labs is volunteer-driven (and most volunteers also have full-time jobs), so your patience is appreciated.

In order to help our first time adopters understand the time and effort needed to have a dog, we require all first time adopters (including those that grew up with dogs but have not had one since living on their own) to foster at least one dog in the age range and energy level requested prior to adopting a dog.

Lu’s Labs charges a $25 non-refundable application fee to offset medical, transportation, and operational costs.

our process

The process was clearly laid out and thorough...The volunteers at every step were well-informed and happy to spend time with us answering questions. Everything I’ve seen convinced me that the organization is dedicated to making the best decisions for the rescued dogs.

Below you will find a high-level overview of our approval and adoption process. Click the section title to learn more about each step.

+ Apply

The first step in the adoption process is to complete an application for adoption online. Please note: Lu’s Labs charges a $25 non-refundable application fee to offset medical, transportation, and operational costs.

Our primary responsibility as a rescue is to ensure the welfare of our labs - which includes facilitating a perfect match with the right forever family for the dog. It is imperative that you are honest and complete in your application responses. Lu’s Labs does not guarantee the placement of any rescue into an applicant’s home and may deny an application based on information provided. Additionally, Lu’s Labs reserves the right to terminate the adoption process should it be determined that false or misleading information has been provided at any point in the adoption process. Lu’s Labs adopts out within a 300-mile radius of Alexandria, Virginia. Should you, the applicant, live outside this area, we urge you to seek out rescues in your area.

Once your application is received, your application will be assigned to relevant vet reference check or landlord reference check volunteers and then to an Adoption Coordinator who will assist you in completing the approval process and help match you with available dogs. Lu’s Labs is volunteer driven (and most volunteers also have full-time jobs), so your patience is appreciated.

**In order to help our first time adopters understand both the time and effort needed to have a dog, as well as determine the type of dog that would be the best fit for their lifestyle, we require all first time adopters (including those that grew up with dogs but have not had one since living on their own) to foster at least one dog in the age range and energy level requested prior to adopting a dog.

+ Reference Checks

Lu’s Labs will contact the veterinary reference and personal references listed on your application for adoption. We ask that you notify your personal references of your application, so the process is not delayed by an inability to get in touch. Your veterinary reference should be the veterinarian that you currently use or have used for previous pets. Please call your veterinarian and give them permission to speak with a representative of Lu’s Labs regarding your pet’s/previous pet’s medical history. Most veterinarians will not give out client information without permission, so a phone call in advance to your vet will help speed up your approval process.

+ Written Questionnaire

All applicants are required to fill out a written questionnaire, which will be emailed to you by your Adoption Coordinator. It is important to fill the questionnaire out as thoroughly and thoughtfully as possible. Your Adoption Coordinator will go over your answers with you during the phone interview for any clarifications that may be necessary. The more details you include, the easier it will be to match your family with a dog, as this questionnaire is used by our Adoption Team and your Adoption Coordinator to help us make the best possible match for our dogs.

+ Phone Interview

Please allow about one hour for the phone interview and note that all members of the household must be present for the call. This call is an opportunity for you and the Adoption Coordinator to get to know each other better, to go over your written questionnaire, to ask questions, and to address any concerns you may have. The Adoption Coordinator will gather information throughout the call that helps facilitate a perfect match for our deserving rescues.

+ Home Check

Once your phone interview has been completed, and your references have been contacted, a home check will be scheduled with a member of our Home Check Team. All members of the household (including children and resident dogs) are required to be present for the home check. A successful home check completes the approval process, and you may refer for dogs that are potential matches.

+ Trainer Selection

All our dogs under 3 and some older dogs have a training addendum associated with their adoption contract. (link to training addendum) You are required to use a trainer that has been approved by Lu’s Labs. A list of those trainers and the link to the Trainer Selection Form can be found here: https://www.luslabs.org/trainerslist

Once these steps have been completed, you are considered fully approved to adopt with us and can move on to:

+ Swipe Right, Swipe Left

Each week, your Adoption Coordinator will send you a list of our upcoming available dogs and together you will determine if any are a match for you. You can help this process along by actively checking our website and Facebook pages and sending your Adoption Coordinator the names of dogs that interest you, so that they can gather more information on them and help determine if any are a good fit. If you and your Adoption Coordinator agree that a dog is a potential match (swipe right), then your application will be sent to the Adoption Team. If the Adoption Team agrees, a phone call will be scheduled between you and the foster family. Connecting with the foster family is your opportunity to verify that the lab does in fact sound like the perfect fit for your family, home, and lifestyle. While you will have discussed the match with your Adoption Coordinator, the foster family knows the dog best. Our rescues are constantly evolving physically, mentally, and behaviorally as they acclimate to the foster environment. It is important to confirm that your knowledge of your intended rescue is as true a representation as is possible. You should ask questions about habits, training, personality, size, schedule, health, and special needs, and any other information you feel is important. This is another opportunity for both you and the foster to verify compatibility.

Please understand that our primary goal and responsibility is to ensure the happiness of our dogs. While you may feel that a specific dog is a good match for you, we will make our decisions based on the needs of the dog.

+ The "Date"

If after speaking with the foster family the dog still sounds like a good match, you will schedule a time for all members of your household (including children and resident dogs) to visit the lab at the foster’s home. When visiting, take your time in evaluating the dog and how he/she will fit into your family. Interact, play, and walk together. Allow any current dog(s) to interact at his/her own pace (do not push the dogs to interact). If everyone passes the “sniff test” the foster will have you read, understand, and sign the adoption contract (add link), Then, you just need to pay the adoption fee (Zelle preferred for payment) and you will be on your way with your new Lu’s Lab.

Once your adoption is complete, please join the Lu’s Labs Alumni Facebook page for updates, support, Welcome to the Lu’s Labs family!

Once you’ve adopted your forever friend, we encourage you to join our large online community of alumni to share your happy tails!

Adoption Contract

Contract Highlights

“Studley” Dudley Paucchi (Adopted 2/29/20)

“Studley” Dudley Paucchi (Adopted 2/29/20)

Ensure that you read and understand the adoption contract in its entirety before signing. You will have an opportunity to discuss the adoption contract with Lu’s Labs at the time of adoption. The following are select contract requirements we wish to highlight, but do not serve as a substitute for the complete contract.

  1. Take your new rescue to the veterinarian of your choice for a physical exam within 10 business days of adoption. Bring any medical records provided to you by the foster family to your veterinarian.

  2. Obtain a prescription for a year-round heartworm (wherein the primary ingredient is Ivermectin) and flea/tick preventative. Treatment for heartworm disease is a painful and lengthy process for dogs, and it can be prevented. Learn more about heartworm disease.

  3. Provide your lab with a collar and identifying tags, including rabies vaccination and applicable licensing requirements for your locality, to wear at al times.

  4. If your rescue is less than 6-months old upon adoption, you are required to have your lab spayed/neutered by 9-months of age (males) or 6-months of age (females). This is non-negotiable and adoption is not finalized until this requirement is met. Detailed information is included in your contract’s spay/neuter addendum.

  5. Register your lab’s microchip in your name with the information provided to you upon adoption.

Contract Addendums

For some adoptions, contract addendums may apply. They include heartworm treatment, training, and spay/neuter requirements.

All Lu’s Labs age 3 and under (and occasionally older dogs), have a training addendum in their contracts. Lu’s Labs takes training very seriously and we only permit force-free, positive reinforcement training. We require all of our adopters to select a trainer from our approved training list prior to meeting a dog. Per our contract, if a dog has a training addendum, the dog is required to be enrolled in a training program within 45 days of adoption. Then choose a trainer from the list and submit your choice directly on the website. If you are unable to find a trainer / facility listed in your geographical area on the website, please note that on your submission form and we will assist you.

**In order to help our first time adopters understand the time and effort needed to have a dog, we require all first time adopters (including those that grew up with dogs but have not had one since living on their own) to foster at least one dog in the age range and energy level requested prior to adopting a dog.

Should circumstances change and you are unable to continue to care for your Lu’s Labs rescue, you must contact Lu’s Labs and return your pup to Lu’s Labs. We under no circumstances want a Lu’s Labs pup to ever see the inside of a shelter again.
